One day soon Siri will know exactly what you want and when

In an unjustly dark and dusty corner of YouTube is a badly compiled video slideshow of Alan Rickman in various stages of monochrome moodiness. It has the look of something slapped together late one night by a distracted student who should have been revising and YouTube is hardly the most salubrious home for Shakespeare's Sonnet 130.


But Rickman's reading is heavenly – he oozes through it:


"My mistress' eyes are nothing like


the sun,


Coral is far more red than her lips'


red;


If snow be white, why then her


breasts are dun;


If hairs be wires, black wires grow on


her head … "


I found it by following some piece of internet flotsam or other – one of those things you end up doing online when you're almost certainly on deadline. But it came to mind again when the female voice of Siri – the voice control feature on Apple's more recent iPhones – was tracked down recently in the US. It's a woman called Susan Bennett, who has variously voiced a cash machine, phone systems and help messages for Delta Airlines.


In the UK, we are more familiar with Jon Briggs, who started as a technology journalist before ending up doing voiceovers. Both endured lengthy recording sessions of more than 5,000 sentences several years ago, with no idea it would all be deconstructed to populate a voice control system that upwards of 100 million people would use.


Which rather led me to think … couldn't Rickman be the voice of my iPhone? If Han Solo can voice the TomTom satnav, why not? Siri is certainly faster now it has graduated from its two-year beta, and connects to properly useful stuff, including Twitter. (Useful being subjective, I appreciate.)


All the merry punchlines planted by Apple engineers are still there. Imagine Rickman's audible nectar: "I love your voice." "Thank you. It's too soon to try out for X Factor, but some day, Jemima."


"Talk dirty to me, Siri." "I can't. I'm as clean as the driven snow."


"Are you hot?" "We were talking about you, not me."


Alan is more than mildly diverting of course, but Siri is an infant in the world of artificial intelligence. Spend any serious amount of time with it and it clearly doesn't do what a personal assistant needs to do – it doesn't learn. Siri is unlikely to be quicker than Googling the information yourself. Learning and then predicting behaviour is where these technologies really start to make a difference.


The research team that came up with Siri, and sold the product to Apple in 2010, have another project brewing. SRI, based at Stanford Research Institute, has created Bright for stressful, highly computerised environments such as disaster response or cyber security, where fast and accurate response is critical. Various cameras and interfaces analyse touch, gesture and facial movements and learn the user's behaviour – which programmes are used, which emails are read, which mechanical processes are repeated regularly – and then starts to create shortcuts. That might be highlighting an email that it knows multiple other users in the organisation are also grappling with, or making the most frequently used piece of software easier to access.


If you typically pick up a bottle of water and switch to Spotify for a break, it might open Spotify when it sees you pick up a bottle of water. It's not creepy; it's automated. It's a mirror, but one that can pre-empt what you need.


Bright is designed for emotionally pressurised environments more demanding than those most of us work in, but the technology, and certainly the benefits, will filter down into consumer technology just as Siri did. Siri itself started as a digital assistant for soldiers in the field.


The issue is "last meter bandwidth", which describes how we, the user, become the bottleneck between the processing power of the computer and what it is capable of outputting. We spend cumulative minutes, even hours, completing repetitive tasks when machines are capable of taking the strain.


From a computer science perspective, learning the behaviour of a single user is tough. This is the small data problem; unlike big data, where patterns and trends easily emerge, individual human beings can be unpredictable and can change behaviour, which is not helpful for pattern-hunting algorithms.


That inconvenient human unpredictability was what caused the "inaccuracy" in a separate statistical project called Far Out, led by two researchers from Google and Microsoft, which could predict our future location. Even years down the line, and taking house moves, marriages and new jobs into account, our behaviour is usually predictable enough that it can be learnt, and then statistically modelled. If that's one tiny project by two researchers, we can only begin to imagine the kind of behaviour and location modelling being developed and deployed by the military.


The promise has always been that technology can relieve us of the mundane, repetitive chores, yet our experience is usually that those are replaced with new repetitive tasks that ensure the more mundane ones can happen by themselves. And if we do free up some time, we stuff it pointlessly with more "productivity" rather than reclaiming any real life.


Perhaps by the time true artificial intelligence filters down, we will be a little more sophisticated in the limits we set ourselves and let the machine take up the slack. Not only could it pick up the grunt work, but our own domestic Bright will be able to surprise us too. It will build in the delight and relief of serendipity and surface some of the flotsam of the web that we enjoy. A little of Sonnet 130, possibly.

Has Apple outsmarted Google?





Once allies, now clearly foes, Apple and Google have been in an intense battle to win the hearts and minds of people across the planet. And while Apple has lost its dominance and market-share to Google’s Android, you could argue that the Cupertino-based giant has outsmarted its Mountain View rival.


If we look purely at the numbers then we all know that Google is the clear leader. Relying on various brands, like Samsung and HTC, Android has swamped our markets with phones ranging from the low-cost Galaxy Pocket to the more sophisticated Samsung S3. Samsung has a clear edge on the market.


But while inroads are being made in the mobile arena, Android is still dominated by Apple’s iPad in the tablet market. It’s still the “tablet of choice” for the discerning user and Apple fired three volleys this year with the launch of the “New iPad” in the first quarter of 2012, followed by the “New New iPad” and the iPad Mini.


Google entered the fray itself this year, launching the Nexus 7; low-priced and accessible to the masses.


Which is actually my point.


While we all seem to think that Google and Apple have the same target market, I’d like to suggest that they don’t. Apple firmly remains the world favourite. Thirty-five percent of school students in the US who use a smartphone are using iPhones. Those who use Android wish they were using iPhones (yes, yes, I concede there is a growing group of fandroids out there who prefer Android phones).


But by and large Apple is targeted at the more affluent user. Apple has made very little effort to compete on price. In fact its tablets and phones are substantially more than the Android offerings. While Android offers a range of phones from entry-level to top-spec, Apple chooses to only produce one model at a time. There is no US$100 iPhone (we’re talking cash-prices here).


So why would Apple choose to have only one model?


I do not believe it is as much of elitism and snobbery as it truly is about economics. And this, I believe, is where Apple has outsmarted Google.


When I speak to my friends who are fandroids, they will always bring up the fact that the apps are free. They boast about the “open-source” nature of Android and that apps are readily available. In fact many of them will denounce any app that does not provide a free alternative (even if they are laced with adverts).


Apple fanbois seem to be very different. One of the first things a fanboi will do is link his iTunes account to his iDevice. And then link his credit-card to his iTunes account. While it’s true that there are many, many free apps on the AppStore, the very nature of the iPhone user is to push the button and pay the once off US$1 to remove the irritating adverts.


Because iPhone users have paid a premium for their phones it is not improper to consider they are sitting in a higher LSM bracket. It means they’re more amenable to buying apps. And since the disposable income of this group is so much higher, they are certainly more open to buying apps.


Conversely, the average (and I highlight average) Android user is using a low-specced device. Lower cost, lower LSM group. And far less likely to buy apps on the Google Play store.


So the question about whether Apple or Android is more successful, I believe, cannot simply be reduced to the number of users, but rather the number of economically active users.


In my opinion Apple has strategically targeted the group of people who are more likely to buy apps in the AppStore. Android has gone for sheer numbers, in the vain hope of swallowing out the competitors.


Apple, however, remains resilient. iPhone and iPad sales remain in the millions. And each user is more inclined to buy an app.


Has Apple outsmarted Google? I believe so. It’s not the profit per device sold that matters, but rather what the user is doing with the device. A sneaky strategy, but one that I believe has paid off.

iOS 7: Here a Bug, There a Bug, Everywhere a Bug,Bug



Apple has pledged to fix a bug in iOS 7 that has been plaguing some users, The Wall Street Journal reported.


The issue affects just a fraction of a percent of customers who use the system, Apple told the paper, promising a fix in an upcoming software update.


This will be the second fix since the iOS 7 was released Sept. 18. The first was issued Sept. 20 to resolve a problem with the iPhone 5s fingerprint scanner.
At least 16 iOS 7 problems have surfaced so far, including a bug that lets anyone bypass the iPhone's lockscreen, glitchy media controls, users receiving other people's messages or contacts, and complaints that the user interface causes motion sickness.
"Quantitatively, I can't tell you that this is a new record for bugs," ABI Research Senior Analyst Michael Morgan told MacNewsWorld, "but I will say this: Apple has opened the door for this to be a buggy release."
Apple did not respond to our request to comment for this story.
Gotta Get a Message to You
Users have been complaining about the problem with iMessage since June, when the beta was released to registered iOS developers.
User Kjt822 complained about iMessage to the Apple Support Communities on June 3.
On July 21, user BarnYard_63 told the Apple Support Communities that some addressees were not getting iMessages and that Apple Support had denied there was a problem with iMessage.
In the ensuing discussion, BarnYard_63 pointed out that angry users had sent 323,000 tweets about iMessage not working in the previous two days. On Aug. 5, the user said Apple had continued to deny there was a problem.
User gjn6595 brought up the problem with iMessage to the Apple Support Communities Sept. 7 and user Seanm85 did so Sept. 18.
"I would say iOS 7 is buggier than 6 or 5, but that is just an impression and not an empirically based judgment," Andrew Jaquith, chief technology officer at SilverSky, told MacNewsWorld.
Cupertino, We Have a Problem
Perhaps iOS 7 is especially buggy because Apple was trying to do too much at one time.
New OS releases "are always going to be buggy, but Apple did a lot of big things at once, and they were under time pressure to deliver -- so it's entirely possible that they didn't do quality checks as thoroughly as they could," ABI's Morgan said.
"Normally [Apple] adds a few new features, maybe they add in a Siri, and that's your ordinary update," Morgan explained. "This time you have feature tweaks, a hardware-based fingerprint scanner, the switch to 64-bit processing, and the whole new UI design paradigm."
Apple's release process is also to blame, Ken Dulaney, a vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, told MacNewsWorld.
"The real criticism is the way they test out the OS," Dulaney said. "Windows sits out in the open market for months and months to shake it out; Apple keeps [iOS] under wraps with limited distribution."
Apple's practice of rolling out an update to everyone at once makes things worse, Morgan suggested. "Once they release a new piece of software, the whole user base is on it and it all happens at once, so all the problems happen to everybody at the same time."
The situation will probably get worse: "As iOS gets more complex -- as it inevitably will -- the process Apple uses will continue to be challenged to keep the introduction bugs at a minimum level," remarked Gartner's Dulaney.
Still, "it's just growing pains," Morgan said. "Most of the issues will be dealt with in the next few months."
About one-third of SilverSky's customers have upgraded their devices to iOS 7 "without too many issues," said Jaquith. "I would say that yes, it is up to snuff, but if you are affected by one of the issues, that won't be much comfort until Apple fixes them."
